Statement Regarding Ethnic Redistricting

A document attributed this week to a Republican state representative from Washington County has generated a great deal of discussion among the conservative community regarding the author’s apparent support for the establishment of an Hispanic voting district in Northwest Arkansas.

In response, the Board of Directors of Conservative Arkansas issued today the following statement:

Conservative Arkansas stands for equal representation of all citizens in government.
Manipulating district boundaries to promote the representation of any specific ethnic or ancestral group of people is wrong. Doing so does not promote democratic representation, but instead undercuts the democratic process. It validates the notion that physical attributes should trump principles, it encourages cultural divisiveness, and it harms our spirit and strength as a state and as a nation.
We are troubled that any legislator would even suggest such an option, and we cannot help but consider—if it were adopted—the demographic redistricting proposals that would follow for the members of every other ethnic group that calls Arkansas their home.
We strongly favor district boundaries drawn purely to assure equal representation of all American citizens under the law.
We have reviewed the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and believe strongly it supports our position.
